Registering resources to the NIF
At the simplest level, registering a resource to the NIF requires providing some basic information about the type of resource
- Level 1: Resources may be added to the NIF by using the input form available through http://neurogateway.org. Registration of a resource currently requires an account. The registration form provides a series of pull down menus where a simplified version of the NIF vocabulary is used to characterize the resource type and general content. A movie tutorial on registering at level 1 is available through here. Because many resources are complicated and provide many functions, providing a simple, consistent characterization of a resource has proven to be challenging.
- Level 2: Level 2 registration currently is implemented (on a limited basis) through additional automated indexing of web page content, based on URL's supplied during Level 1 registration. Thus, at this time, resource providers need not take additional action to make their resource known through the Level 2 web crawling and searching features of NIF.
- Level 3: Level 3 registration involves a two step process: 1) registering a resource with the NIF mediator; 2) mapping content to the NIF vocabularies. The first step of registration requires technical knowledge of the database capabilities and network settings of the resource using a specialized tool available through the NIF. The second step is performed by a domain expert in consultation with a database administrator and is accomplished using the NIF Concept Mapping tool. Because these are specialized tools that are offered in the current version of the NIF as prototypes, registration at level 3 at this time requires a resource provider to contact the NIF.
